With the availability to download vSphere 6.7 Update 1, getting the home lab up to the latest and greatest has been a priority. The new vSphere release contains exciting new functionality across the board. Who of us has not been anxiously awaiting the day when the HTML 5 client would be fully featured and we can do away with the Flex client? In the home lab this has been a long time coming. The day has finally arrived! I have been running the various patch levels of vSphere 6.7 in the home lab up until Update 1 was available. Using the vSphere Update Manager or VUM, I was able to easily get all hosts upgraded to Update 1 without any issues. In this post, we will take a look at how to Upgrade to VMware vSphere ESXi 6.7 Update 1 using VUM and the process to get the baseline created and actually perform the upgrade.
Upgrade to VMware vSphere ESXi 6.7 Update 1 using VUM
One of the great new features with the HTML 5 client is the ability to have “dark mode”. While this doesn’t add tremendous capabilities to the functionality of vSphere itself, dark mode themes are extremely popular across the board and are arguably easier on the eyes. In the walk through of the Update Manager process, I will be using the dark mode them in the vSphere client to perform the actions.

Takeaways
The process to Upgrade to VMware vSphere ESXi 6.7 Update 1 using VUM is incredibly easy. Rollling through a vSphere cluster using VUM is a great way to quickly get all hosts updated to the latest and greatest release. Using the new HTML 5 vSphere client worked flawlessly and I didn’t encounter any issues with the HTML 5 client running through the process to upgrade to vSphere 6.7 Update 1. The only glitch I have seen so far was a display glitch where the vSAN properties are still displayed in the white theme inside of the dark theme box. For the vSAN upgrade portion, I switched the theme back to the default theme for administering the vSAN upgrade. Speaking of the vSAN upgrade, in the next post, we will take a look at the additional steps to upgrade VMware vSAN to vSAN 6.7 Upgrade 1, including the on-disk format version. Stay tuned!
As a VMware administrator, most of our efforts in vSphere infrastructure is patching and upgrading your vSphere apart from the Production support. With the modern datacenter and high-end servers installed with GB’s & TB’s of memory took look time to initialize the hardware during ESXi host reboot. Complete hardware reboot is acceptable when we perform hardware firmware upgrade or other hardware related changes but rebooting entire hardware along with ESXi reboot during simple host patch or even during host upgrades is one of the time-consuming tasks. To avoid the time-consuming device initialization and self-testing procedures, vSphere 6.7 released with the feature ESXi 6.7 Quick Boot.
ESXi 6.7 Quick Boot
What is ESXi 6.7 Quick Boot?
Quick Boot is a vSphere feature that speeds up the upgrade process of an ESXi server. A regular reboot involves a full power cycle that requires firmware and device initialization. Quick Boot optimizes the reboot path to avoid this, saving considerable time from the upgrade process. With ESXi 6.7 Quick boot process, hardware does not go through the normal process of reboot operations such as POST, firmware load, re-initialization of hardware resources, reload ACPI/SMBIOS tables etc…
You can make use of ESXi 6.7 Quick boot feature only with compatible hardware installed with ESXi 6.7. If the ESXi 6.7 hardware is incompatible with vSphere 6.7 Quick Boot, it will perform a regular reboot which includes the standard hardware initialization.
Hardware Requirement for ESXi 6.7 Quick Boot
To make use of ESXi 6.7 quick boot features, compatible hardware is needed. Not all servers or configurations support the EXi 6.7 Quick Boot feature. Currently, Dell and HP are the OEM hardware vendors supports ESXi Quick boot process. Click on the below links to see the supported server models for ESXi 6.7 Quick boot,
Apart from hardware compatibility, Below are some of the additional requirement:
- The instalation of ESXi 6.7 must run native drivers only, this means that no VMKLinux drivers can be in use
- ESXi Secure Boot must not be enabled on the Update Manager
How to validate System Compatibility with ESXi Quick Boot?
To check if your system is compatible with ESXi Quick Boot, run this command on the ESXi host from the shell and This script will list all issues preventing Quick Boot from being available on the ESXi host.
In the below example, My hardware model is not compatible with ESXi Quick Boot and it will boot as Normal boot.
How to enable Quick Boot?
Quick boot needs to be enabled from vSphere Update Manager settings. Even though Update Manager support is included in the HTML5 client in vSphere 6.7, the Quick boot can only be enabled it from Web Client (Flex Client). To Enable Quick boot, Login to the vCenter server using vSphere Web CLient -> Home -> Update Manager -> Manage- > Settings -> Host/Cluster Settings -> Edit
Select the checkbox “Enable Quick Boot” to enable the ESXi 6.7 quick boot feature. Click Ok. The Update Manager UI will present Quick Boot as an option for servers that support the feature, however, for some servers, this option will not be available and your host will perform regular reboot rather than a Quick Boot.
If your hardware is not compatible with the Quick boot, It will perform Normal boot. In the below screenshot, You can notice one server supports “Quick Boot” and another one is “Normal Boot”. You can notice this when you perform patching or upgrade using vSphere Update Manager.
We are done. I hope this article helps you understand the ESXi 6.7 Quick boot feature. Thanks for Reading!!! Be social and share it on social media, if you feel worth sharing it.
1What’s New in vSphere 6.7 Update 1?17th April 2018, VMware has introduced vSphere 6.7 with lot of new features. 18th October 2018, VMware announces vSphere 6.7 Update 1 is now generally available. There is some big changes that we’ll review those changes in this post.
First and biggest change is using single platform for vSphere Client. vCenter High Availability has a big change and improvement. Content Library gives you more flexibility.
vSphere Client
HTML5 based vSphere Client has been fully featured now and it will single platform to manage vSphere 6.7 from now. There are two features I want to highlight from the vSphere Client in vSphere 6.7 Update 1. The first is the improved searching capabilities. Customers can now search objects with a string and filter based attributes. These attributes include Tags, Custom Attributes, and VM power state to name a few. For common searches, there is also an option to save the search for future usage.
The second feature I want to highlight is considered one of the top feature requests. The vSphere team has been listening and now the dark theme option is available. Now customers can switch between the traditional light theme to the new dark theme in a single click.
vCenter High Availability
vCenter High Availability has three-step configuration now:
- vSphere SSO credentials for either management vCenter Server or management credentials
- Resource settings for the Passive and Witness nodes including compute, storage, and network
- IP Settings for the Passive and Witness nodes
Also included is auto-creation of the Active node clones to create the Passive and Witness nodes.
Content Library
This release Content Library now supports two more new file formats. This functionality is already available to VMware Cloud on AWS customers. Now it’s making its way to on-premises vSphere customers in vSphere 6.7 Update 1. Customers can now manage their templates on the local vCenter Server Content Library. Replication of template files to other subscriber Content Libraries is not available in this release. The other new supported format is Open Virtual Appliance (OVA). When importing an OVA file format in a Content Library, its content is first extracted. This allows Content Library to validate the OVA manifest and certificate. After the validation process is complete, it creates an OVF item for deployment. Give Content Library a try in your environment and let us know your thoughts.
vSphere Health
When deploying your vCenter Server there is an option to enable CEIP. It stands for Customer experience improvement program. When enabled data gets sent to VMware’s analytics cloud, customer workload data is not part of the data collected. This is all anonymous, data is secure and housed in VMware’s data centers. VMware uses this telemetry data to help improve features and customer experience. Now when enabled this functionality provides even more value to the customers. It provides an assessment of the vSphere environment and returns KBs on how to solve the problem at hand. For example, the warning you get when you only have a single management network for your ESXi hosts. We detect and provide alarms for both existing and potential problems. This helps in protecting customer environments from future problems.
Keep in mind this is a new service and will not have all health checks day one. The good news is this services independent of the vSphere release cycle. It features an out-of-band delivery infrastructure. If you are running vSphere 6.7 you also have the same capabilities as well. The goal here is overtime this service will become more proactive to ensure you have a healthy vSphere environment. If you haven’t enabled CEIP during your vSphere deployment, it’s easy enough to enable and gain the new benefits this service has to offer.

vSAN
- Guided cluster creation and extension. vSAN 6.7 Update 1 introduces a Quickstart wizard in the vSphere Client. The Quickstart workflow guides the user through the deployment process for vSAN and non-vSAN clusters. It covers every aspect of the initial configuration, such as host, network, and vSphere settings. Quickstart also plays a part in the ongoing expansion of a vSAN cluster by allowing a user to add additional hosts to the cluster.
- HBA firmware update through VUM. Storage I/O controller firmware for vSAN hosts is now included as part of the vSphere Update Manager remediation workflow. This functionality was previously provided in a vSAN utility called Configuration Assist. VUM also supports custom ISOs that are provided by certain OEM vendors and vCenter Servers that do not have internet connectivity.
- Maintenance mode enhancements. vSAN now performs a simulation of data evacuation to determine if the operation will succeed or fail before it starts. If the evacuation will fail, vSAN halts the operation before any resynchronization activity begins. In addition, the vSphere Client enables you to modify the component repair delay timer, so you can adjust this setting.
- Historical and usable capacity reporting. vSAN 6.7 Update 1 introduces a historical capacity dashboard that reports on capacity usage over a period of time, including historical changes to the deduplication ratio. This capability provides increased network flexibility for stretched clusters and 2-node clusters that utilize witness traffic separation.
- Health check enhancements. Storage controller firmware health check now supports multiple approved firmware levels to provide additional flexibility. You can silence health checks from the UI. You can purge inaccessible swap objects that are no longer needed. The All hosts have matching subnets health check has been deprecated.
- Unicast network performance test. A new proactive network performance test, based on Unicast, determines if all hosts in the cluster have proper connectivity and meet bandwidth recommendations.
- vRealize Operations enhancements within vCenter Server. Native vROps dashboards built into vCenter Server can display intelligence for vSAN stretched clusters. Additionally, the deployment process now supports virtual distributed switches and full compatibility with vROps 7.0.
- In-product support diagnostics. vSAN 6.7 Update 1 introduces product diagnostics to assist VMware Global Support in resolving customer cases more quickly. Specialized performance dashboards in vCenter Server, and an on-demand network diagnostic test, reduce the need to generate and upload support bundles to GSS, speeding time to resolution of support cases. In addition, health check history is stored in a log file to aid support personnel.
- Advanced settings. The vSphere Client provides an Advanced settings dialog box (Configure > vSAN > Services > Advanced Options). You can adjust the component repair delay timer. You also can enable/disable thin swap files, site read locality and large cluster support.

As I had covered back in the end of August with VMWorld 2018 in the US, on the first day, exciting news was announced for a new vSphere release – vSphere 6.7 Update 1. With vSphere 6.7 Update 1, VMware pulled out all the stops and introduced long awaited features that have been teased for some time. Can you say fully-featured HTML 5 client?! However, the UI is only one of the major components of this release. However, at the end of August the release was only announced and was not available for download. As of yesterday that has changed, VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 Available for Download! Once again, let’s take a look at the great new features contained in the vSphere 6.7 Update 1 release and see how these new features and functionality take VMware’s vSphere to the next level.
VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 New Features
Even though I had covered the release announcement, there are so many new features in this release and they are worth taking a look at again, especially since the download is now available. The new features in this release consist of the following:
- Fully-featured HTML 5 client
- New Platinum Edition
- Upgraded vSAN version
- New Content Library enhancements
- vCenter Convergence Tool
- New Cluster Wizard
- vMotion for NVIDIA Quadro vDWS VMs
VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 Fully-featured HTML 5 Client
Ever since VMware introduced the web client with the flash based architecture, the web interface has long been a sore point with administering vSphere environments. With the teasing first release of the HTML 5 client, customers quickly saw the light at the end of the tunnel. The HTML 5 client is beautiful, quick, and gives roughly the same user experience as the old vSphere Windows client that has long been deprecated. However, to fully administer vSphere, administrators could not use the HTML 5 client and still had to make use of the flex/flash based client.
With each new release of vSphere, VMware has been making great strides at fully implementing the new HTML 5 web client and had announced earlier in the year that the HTML 5 vSphere client would be fully functional in the fall of 2018. VMware came through with this promise early, at least by way of announcement, by announcing vSphere 6.7 Update 1 at the end of August at VMWorld. Now with the availability to download vSphere 6.7 Update 1, customers can now make full use of the HTML 5 client for administering vSphere environments.
VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 Available for Download
VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 Platinum Edition
With the release of vSphere 6.7 Update 1, VMware also announced the availability of a new vSphere version – vSphere Platinum Edition. The new Platinum Edition is very security focused and rolls many of the vSphere security products into a single offering. Most notable of the security features included in this edition, is the inclusion of VMware’s AppDefense product that provides application white listing and AI powered intelligence to stop threats at the application layer.
AppDefense works hand-in-hand with VMware’s NSX product to provide security mechanisms to help secure and provide microsegmentation and application filtering to the vSphere environment. This is a great new offering in this space that certain fills a need in the industry in an ever-growing security-conscious world.
VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 vSAN and HCI Enhancements
With each version of vSphere released, vSAN is an exciting component that always benefits in features and functionality with each release. VMware’s vSphere 6.7 Update 1 is no exception to that rule. With vSphere 6.7 Update 1, vSAN gets exciting new functionality including the ability to update storage controller firmware right from within Update Manager! This means that vSphere administrators can take care of both software and firmware updates related to storage, right from within the Update Manager interface and within the same maintenance window.
Another great new feature is an UNMAP functionality that provides the unmapping of storage and space reclamation with vSAN. Duncan Epping provides a great overview of this new functionality in his post found here.
VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 New Content Library enhancements
The content library has received great new improvements in this release. With vSphere 6.7 Update 1, you can import OVA templates from an HTTPS endpoint and local storage. You can also import virtual machine templates into the content library which allows access to the associated operations such as deploying a VM directly from the Content Libary.
VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 vCenter Convergence Tool
Another great new feature with the vSphere 6.7 Update 1 release is the vCenter Server Convergence Tool. This new tool allows migrating from External Platform Services Controller configurations to the Embedded PSC architecture. The Embedded PSC architecture is much simpler and easier to administer as well as provides a much smaller footprint from a virtual machine perspective in the vSphere environment. Additionally, the added benefits of no longer being required to have load balancers for HA and no more multi-site replication make this a worthwhile move from an architecture standpoint. This tool greatly simplifies the process of getting from the external PSC architecture to the embedded architecture.
VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 New Cluster Wizard
New with vSphere 6.7 Update 1, there is a great new cluster quick start wizard added. This allows quickly provisioning and configuring vSphere clusters along with the configuration of HA, DRS, vSAN and even network configuration such as virtual distributed switches needed for cluster specific services. This new feature makes the process of creating a cluster a “wizardized” process that certainly helps to cut down on misconfiguration or any other issues that may come to light with improper configuration.
VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 vMotion for NVIDIA Quadro vDWS VMs
The technology in this space has certainly be developing rapidly. VMware has introduced enhancements with vSphere 6.7 Update 1 in regards to NVIDIA vMotion vDWS as well as Intel FPGA Support.
VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 Available for Download
As you can see above, this is a great release, chocked full of enhancements, new features, and the exciting release of the fully-featured HTML 5 client for vSphere administration. This was very much the release that many VMware customers were waiting for in regards to upgrades. Additionally, the vsphere 6.7 Update 1 release officially supports the upgrade path from vSphere 6.5 U2 to the vSphere 6.7 Update 1 release, so getting to vSphere 6.7 is no longer blocked if environments were first upgraded to the vSphere 6.5 U2 release.
Offical Download links are as follows:
Things to remember:
In general there are a few rules of thumb to remember. Always check with VMware to see order of upgrade operations, especially if you have other vSphere products running in your environment. In the case of a simple vCenter/ESXi host environment, you always upgrade vCenter Server first and then your ESXi hosts. Make sure before upgrading that your particular backup solution supports the upgraded version of vSphere as this can lead to issues and failed backups.
Takeaways
VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 is a great new release! It contains loads of new features and functionality that certainly make this a version for upgrade consideration. If you have been holding out waiting on vSphere 6.7 Update 1, the wait is over with the news of VMware vSphere 6.7 Update 1 Available for Download officially. No longer will administration need to be carried out between the Flex client and the HTML 5 client as everything can now be done in the HTML 5 client. New vSAN improvements, vCenter convergence tool, content library, cluster wizard, and other new features make this the most exciting vSphere release to date.
